Bookstove has published a list of 100 Novels All Horror Fans Should Read. It’s a pretty respectable list, including both classics and contemporary works from the genre. (Even though it has Twilight on the list. Twilight? Seriously? Twilight as horror? Whatever.) Keep in mind that nearly all of these books were published for adults so if you’re finding YA horror too weak for your tastes and you’re looking for something darker and more intense, you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for here.

I’ve seen a lot of movies based on these, but I’ve read fewer of them.
A great horror movie based on a less than great book is “The Other”. (Author Thomas Tryon, but the book is probably not worth reading.)
Plus come on, American Gods is not horror.

The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper? I read it when I was young. I don’t think it horrific at all.
Love Curse of the Rumbaughs by Jack Gantos otoh…. creepy.
