Vampires Vs. Zombies
April 3, 2009
VS.
Help me settle a dispute, please. Which type of supernatural creature is more intriguing to you when you are choosing books to read: vampires or zombies?
Note that I’ve listed them in alphabetical order so as not to show any personal bias.
Thx, Mari

well, i suppose there are alot of factors, vampires are less scary and more mysterious and actiony, but zombies provide nonstop horror, i like vampires better tho =]]

I think it’s hard to write a book ABOUT zombies, what with the whole mindlessness thing that makes them not very interesting characters. If they’re just being used as the Monster Motivation though, I like zombies better just because vampires are being used a lot latly. Yes, latly.

Samo, you make me hurt. But vampires are totally overused now, what with Twilight and all the other vampire series. Besides, writing a zombie book doesn’t really have to be about zombies. It could be a figure of speech, too.
But I’d have to answer that I try to stay away from both vampires and zombies.

Don’t zombies just bump into each other? They are not supposed to have a motive because,… well,… they’re zombies–like orcs.
Vampires are seductive so they have to look good or they have to run faster to catch people. They have cleaner nails… or claws, whatever. If I have to choose I’d stake my choice on vampires.

Hmph, thanks to twlight, I can’t stand the idea of vampires, unless they’re something REALLY special. . . Zombies are often pretty cheesy but they are classic in scary stories, so I say zombies hehe
Zombies are so senseless too, they don’t stop to reason usually, so doesn’t that make them much more scary? Plus they don’t really have a weakness, so they’re pretty much invincible! Woot zombies

Zombies!! The only thing I’ll grant is that vampires can make interesting romance characters, whereas a zombie romantic lead is just plain disgusting. But for fear factor and general coolness level, zombies rule.

Rebecca!!
You’re not supposed to have a vote either since this debate is between you and me. But now I have to weigh in: Vampires in general are more intriguing and glamorous than zombies.
Except that, actually, I prefer werewolves.
One pretty good exception to the “zombies don’t make good romantic leads or good protagonists at all” is Tommy in the book Generation Dead by Daniel Waters. Tommy is attractive, intelligent, and of good character. He’s way more ethical than the living guys who bully and try to re-kill the living impaired teens. I need to read the sequel….

well, vampires are pretty cool but a little over rated at this point. not saying zombies are better to read about cause really with zombies there only one plot in my mind.thats would be zombie apocalypse. anything else i think is just silly. so i think ill have to go with vampires just becasue you dont always know whats going to happen

I’m voting for fairies. Not the little cute ones. The tall dangerous ones.

Vampires.
And not just because of Twilight (although that is what started my reading vamp books), but because the other vampire books I’ve read I have enjoyed very much.
I agree with everyone else who said that you can’t really write a book about zombies, i mean, there really is nothing there. They are just moving corpses.
Sooo Vampires all the way!

Everyone who says you can’t write a book about zombies should read The Forests of Hands and Teeth, which just came out and is awesome.
For my part, however, I prefer leprechauns.

Definitely read The Forests of Hands and Teeth. Very interesting. It even speculates that zombies *might* have feelings.

Niki Lee | April 4, 2009 at 2:59 pm
I go with Katie on that one. Forget vampires and zombies, faeries are SOOOOOOO much better. Though, I’m starting to like werewolves and studd like that better. Hehe.

I think zombies are cool. They have no alternate motives, they just want to eat you. I respect that. Though I will still grab a chainsaw and tear through like an acholic through free beer. Vampires like to trick people and I can’t tell who is and who isn’t one anymore. More on this when I deal with these man slaughter charges……..

I’ve never read any books about zombies, so… I vote vampires. Wait, there was one I read (The Forest of Hands and Teeth), and that one was pretty good. But I still vote vampires., because zombies for the most part don’t seem to have personalities, and vampires almost always do. Therefore, vampires are more interesting.

I’ve never read a zombie book so i am def. bias but i couldn’t imagine it being very entertaining with page after page of zombie butt kicking. The drama of the suvivors in between might be a little more amusing but the other material might make me put the book down. Movies are one thing all together. Vampire books have mystery, romance 90% of the time, and still plenty of butt kicking.

Ghosts, I prefer them. But World War Z is an interesting book about zombies.

Zombies. It’s all about the zombies…and I’m a hard core Buffy fan.

Vampires feed on blood.
Zombies feed on brains.
Zombies cannot die of blood loss.
A vampire cannot function without a brain.
Zombies win.

katie the librarian | April 9, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Yes. In a Trying-To-Eat-Each-Other-To-Death Contest, zombies would win. But I don’t think that was the question, Kory.

By the way, can we play that at the next Gamers Unplugged?

Well, as far as books and stories with zombies and vampires go, most are the same cookie-cutter story over and over again.
Vampire books and stories end up being one of these:
-Ha! I bit you! You are one of us!
-Oooh, youre a vampire, I’m not. Let’s hook up!
Zombie books, naturally, usually focus around:
-*rises from grave* BRAINS!!
Because this tends to happen, vampire books get more attention due to the room for a storyline to develop, usually into a love story, because vampires aren’t rotting, smelly, and dim-witted. So, as far as books are concerned, I suppose vampire books are more entertaining to read than zombie books.

Personally, I don’t like the cheesy Justice League characters of said Twilight, they disgusted my view on vampires, how can you respect emotionally charged cover model goths that stole to much glitter from their mum? (The whole being in the sun deal)
Yet sadly, I’d have to go with . . . bah, vampires. Even though their view of them nowadays is saddening, they make a more interesting book than one of zombies, I need to read Hands or Teeth or whatever that zombie book is called. It seems interesting.
So for this debate . . and this debate only, vampires. There should a be,
”Better book, Vampires or Werewolves” debate.
(And when I said Justice League I referred that to them because, don’t they each have like, weird powers? One can read minds and another can control fire or something? Or is that just the book. They seem less like vampires and more like people that belong in the SuperFriends base.)

Being as it may vampires are not as cool as people would think. It takes a lot more for a vampire to change you then it does a zombie. Also not to mention that the aspect of a zombie should be more intriguing and more horrifying. To become a zombie all you have to do is die. To become a vampire there are to many ways to do it. A zombie really is the living dead. Vampires are the living undead. I personally like zombies more. Oh and just to burst everyone’s bubble. I am a known hater of Twilight but I am not going to let one persons wild imagination twist my thought on vampires. In fact the Twilight vampires have something different going for them even though it is to sparkle. Not that cool of a power.
Sincerely,
Nicholas A.D.
